Our improving outcomes each year are a positive reflection of the increasingly effective work that Holderness Academy staff are contributing. The students are embracing the evolving culture and their extraordinary efforts, regardless of the challenge, are resulting in individual success. We are extremely proud of the achievements of our students with many being able to access our successful Sixth Form College to begin their Post 16 pathway.

There were a large number of individual success stories, notably;

James Wilson, who achieved a fantastic nine Grade 9s and a Distinction*

Thomas Stephenson, who achieved five Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and a Grade 7.

Ethan Gollings, who achieved four Grade 9s and six Grade 8s.

We are delighted to have welcomed them all into our Sixth Form.

Yet again, and at a time when results nationally appear to have gone down, students from Hessle High School are celebrating remarkable GCSE results today. 

Adam Pickering achieved some of the highest grades with Grade 9s in PE, Geography and Science along with Grade 7s in both English Language and Literature.  He was closely followed by Fred Camp with Grade 9s in Geography and Business and Grade 7s in Maths, Physics and English Language.

Izabelle Owen’s success came in the core subjects with Grade 7s in English, Maths and Combined Science, while Talia Nieto-Charlton was consistently strong across all of her subjects, achieving Grade 8s in Art, Biology and English Literature as well as Grade 7s in Geography, RE, Maths and Physics.

But it is in terms of progress where we have found the most incredible success.  Poppy Tuovinen led the way with a Progress 8 score of +3.25 which means that she exceeded her nationally-benchmarked targets by more than three grades per subject.  A remarkably achievement which was secured with two Grade 9s and a total of ten subjects at Grade 4 or above.

Princess Baddungon had similar outcomes with a progress score of +2.88.  Princess also passed ten GCSEs at Grade 4 or better while Libby Simpkin (+2.16) and Minni Tuovinen (+2.51) also made exceptional progress.

The waiting finally ended today for our Year 11 ‘Class of 2019’, (who, across the Trust, number over 1,000 students), when they received their GCSE results. I have no doubt that at each school there was apprehension and anxiety as the students waited to receive their grades, as well as anticipation and expectation about what the immediate future might hold depending on the grades achieved. Once those grades were known there would be a spectrum of emotions, from joy and delight to relief, and even in some cases disappointment. Parents and carers, who have provided support over many years along with the teachers and support staff who have guided the students through their examination courses will have mirrored these emotions and it is appropriate that we recognise the important role these people have played in supporting every student in one way or another.

The waiting is over and students of Hessle Sixth Form College are celebrating the results achieved in this year’s A Levels and Vocational qualifications.

And there are some exceptional achievements for the students and staff to celebrate.

The highest attaining student is Jack Sawyer who achieved A* Grades in Chemistry and Maths, along with A Grades in Biology and Physics. Jack also achieved a Grade A in his EPQ and he achieved all of this success while also holding down a key position in the Sixth Form Senior Student Group. Amy Morgan is also celebrating great success with A Grades in Biology and Chemistry, along with an A* in Textiles.

Our Head Boy, Matthew Picken, also showed that it is possible to combine academic success while also making a contribution to leadership in the school. He is celebrating A Grades in History and Classics, along with a Grade B in English Language.

Two other students are incredibly proud of the exceptional progress they have made in the Sixth Form.

David Hall achieved a Distinction* in Applied Science along with Grades A and B in Geology and Maths respectively. These grades represent a Progress Score of +1.7 which means that David has exceeded his benchmark targets by almost two grades.

Nathan Carter has also made strong progress. Distinction* in Sport and a Merit in Applied Science represents progress that is a full grade ahead of targets.

It is in the Science Department, where the strongest A Level results have been recorded with 100% of Biology students achieving Grades A*-B, while 88% of Chemistry students achieved the same feat. Students also performed strongly in English Language with 71% achieving Grades A*-B.

There were also excellent outcomes across a number of Vocational Subjects including in ICT and in Engineering where over 80% of students achieved either a Distinction or Distinction*.

The amount of effort, preparation and commitment that is required to be successful at this level is significant and, as a Trust, we are celebrating some outstanding individual success stories at A level and also in Vocational subjects, with the vast majority of students gaining qualifications that will enable them to move onto the next phase of life with many of them going onto university, others taking apprenticeships and some moving into the world of work.
